GRIM AND GRISLY

No matter where they were located—tents, houses, barns, churches—Civil War field hospitals were full of blood and death. Most of the war’s surgeries were performed there.

A journalist visited a Union field hospital during the June 1862 Battle of Gaines’s Mill, Virginia. “The wounded lay in the yard and lane, under the shade,” he wrote, “waiting their turns to be hacked and maimed.”

A young girl never forgot her experience in a house used as a field hospital after the Battle of Antietam. Along with other townspeople, she had volunteered to care for wounded Confederate soldiers. Sickened by what she saw and smelled in the upstairs rooms, she had to hang over the staircase, trying to catch her breath and regain her composure.
